Bayt Jobs on Twitter
You’d have to try hard not to hear Twitter mentioned by Larry King, or CNN, or Ashton Kutcher, or Gulf News, and so on. The buzz around Twitter is huge and people are micro-blogging their interests 140 characters at a time from across the globe.
So what’s the big deal? Well, Twitter’s appeal to many is the ease of publishing snippets of information, links, thoughts, new events comments – among other things. twitter appeals to the blogging crowd who never had the time or attention span to compose blog posts, or to the individuals and business looking for information in real-time. Do a Google search and you get a list of indexed web pages – after Google has crawled them. Do a Twitter search and you get real-time citizen-powered journalism. Twitter is part of the real-time web.
We’re running our own little experiment here with Twitter. We’re tweeting some of our media, marketing and tech jobs on a Twitter account. We have job alerts which let the tech do the work for the job seeker – pushing matching jobs out to job seekers at their request. With this Twitter account, people can “follow” us and get updates in their Twitter feed.
It’s purely opt-in and we are sticking to this niche of jobs since this reflects the early-adopters who are on Twitter. If people find this valuable then we have plans to expand this service for people.
If you’re on Twitter you can follow us here @BaytJobs

For SEO and Marketing Gains – Hire A Journalist
Job security is on everyone’s mind these days. Those of us with a job are thinking about how we can best position ourselves within our company and contribute positively to the bottom – but it’s not always up to us to decide. For those who have been let go, they’re looking to get back in the game. We met many of these people a few weeks back.
Journalists have not been immune from job cuts. One specific case of job cuts in Dubai came when ITP – a leading publisher in the Region – cut 60 jobs after previously making several smaller cuts.
While I don’t wish this uncertainty on anyone, this is actually a great opportunity for other companies – even those who say they are not hiring. Let me explain…
We all need to hire a journalist.
You see, companies realize – or should – that marketing is increasingly becoming an online game. And when I refer to marketing I mean product and service marketing, as well as, marketing and branding a company to prospective hires as a top employer.
Bayt.com to launch first pan-regional Virtual Job Fair in Middle East recruitment drive
Bayt.com, the Middle East’s number one job site, announced today that it will be hosting a pan-regional Virtual Job Fair (VJF), in a region-wide drive to address the Middle East’s growing levels of unemployment. The VJF, which will be operational on the Bayt.com website, will run for five days between March 22nd and 26th, 2009 and will offer both employers and job seekers from across the entire Middle East a convenient and hassle-free opportunity to interact.
The pan-regional VJF is the fifth online job fair organized and run by Bayt.com, and follows from highly successful versions over the past year including in the UAE, Jordan, Kuwait and KSA. A total of 99,000 job seekers have participated in the previous four Virtual Job Fairs.
Sponsored by the Qatar Foundation, the organization leading Qatar’s drive to become a knowledge-based society through education and learning, and in conjunction with media partner The Peninsula and Al Sharq; the pan-regional VJF will focus on effectively connecting qualified job seekers with the best-fit career opportunities around the Middle East region.
Tips on how to participate in Bayt.com Virtual Job Fair
We hosted a number of local virtual job fairs last year (you can read about them here, here and here). In order to give Bayt.com job seekers the maximum exposure, Bayt.com will be hosting the Middle East Virtual Job Fair on March 22, 2009. The event is sponsored by Qatar Foundation and will last for 5 days till March 26, 2009.
The aim of the event is to offer employers and job seekers alike a chance to conveniently and effectively connect and interact online; thereby providing qualified job seeking candidates with interesting career opportunities; and giving local, regional and international employers access to professionals from around the region; pushing the online recruitment concept even further.
Given below are some useful tips for job seekers on how to make the best use of this event.
Visit all the Booths
Visit all the booths in each floor to explore different employers at the virtual job fair. Have a look at the open vacancies that each employer has and apply to relevant jobs. If you can research about the companies participating in the virtual job fair, that will help you go right to the company on top of your priority list.

CV Tips and Job Hunting Tips
Glenn Kelman, the CEO of Redfin, an online real estate brokerage firm recently posted a great guest post on Guy Kawasaki’s blog about writing a CV. Building a Personal Brand
To paraphrase Charles Dickens, in both the best of times and in the worst of times, the job market is never easy. Just showing up and being there is never enough. You need to distinguish yourself for the value and benefit that you will bring to a company. You need to communicate you value in a clear Personal Brand Statement. Just like companies and products need a clear positioning statement, so do you.
Personal Branding is the process whereby people and their careers are marked [and marketed] as brands. A Personal Brand Statement is a succinct statement of the strong core statement of the aptitudes, abilities and experiences that differentiates you from others and helps you gain a competitive advantage in your current and future jobs.
If you cannot communicate what makes you different (and better) from others with similar education and work experience then you are either not clear on your unique value – or you don’t have significant unique value.
You’re not clear? Write down the quantifiable achievements that set you apart. How have you impacted the bottom line of companies where you have worked. List the points that set you apart from others: things you have done, things you can do, topics you have studied, awards, achievements, etc. What are great at?
A Better Way Finding Jobs in the Middle East – coming soon
As we mentioned a few days back, we were imminently launching two projects to start 2009. The first project was our exciting project to crowdsource video contest for our site, called the I can draw Video Contest, and now we are happy to give a sneak-peak at the second.
We’ve been working hard for months trying to really optimize and evolve the job seeker’s experience on Bayt.com. Many of the changes won’t be obvious, but they should be beneficial to all of our users. We want Bayt.com to be even faster, easier and more effective a source to find jobs in Dubai and jobs in the Middle East and North Africa.
If you’re reading this blog it means you either found it randomly or are a regular reader. In both cases, you are who we need right now. We’ll give you a sneak-peak at some of our changes. In return, we’d like your understanding – there are still some bugs and some other changes coming – and we’d also appreciate your feedback.
